Take Charge of Your Day With Power Postures!

Hey everyone, I was watching this video the other day and wanted to share. As you know Neurosomatic therapy believes form follows function and function follows form, so naturally it can be understood that your posture can affect how you feel everyday. Take a few minutes and watch this video on Power Postures from Amy Cuddy. As Amy explains how power postures not only empower you but can change the physiology inside your body, the link between form and function is apparent. Amy's study looks into levels of Testosterone, our dominance hormone and cortisone, our stress hormone. Powerful and high power leaders tend to have higher testosterone levels and low cortisone levels making them assertive but level headed under pressure. In this study, subjects sit in either a low or high power pose for 2 minutes, in this short time there are significant changes in hormone levels. Low power poses tended to yield less testosterone and more cortisone levels in test subjects, Where as high power poses yielded more testosterone and less cortisone after having subjects sit in varying positions.

If you feel like one of these people who tend to collapse on themselves while sitting or go throughout your day slouching, take a few minutes to try a power pose. In only 2 minutes your testosterone levels can be increased by 20% and cortisone levels will decrease by 25%, not only making you less stress reactive and confident but empowering you to take charge of your day. See below for some good and not so good postures we put ourselves in daily.

Poor posture: Head is in front of shoulders, shoulders are internally rotated, chest is collapsing, neck is straightening, lower back is straight.

Good (Power) posture: Head is over shoulders, chest is lifted, Shoulders are under the ear and pulled back, neck and lower back have improved curve.
